26-year-old man arrested for allegedly slapping girlfriend’s daughter

A Las Cruces man has been arrested for allegedly slapping his girlfriend’s daughter. 26-year-old Evan Rios was arrested Wednesday when police were dispatched to a local elementary school after school staff learned that a 6-year-old girl was possibly abused at home. Investigators learned that Rios was helping the young girl with homework Tuesday evening and each time the girl mispronounced a word, Rios allegedly slapped her face. Investigators believe Rios slapped the girl approximately 21 times. Investigators observed prominent redness and marks on the left side of the girl’s neck and behind her left ear. The investigation is ongoing and charges against the girl’s mother are possible. Rios was arrested Wednesday and booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center where he’s initially being held without bond.
