Customs Officials Use DNA to Stop Human Smugglers at Border

Customs officials are using DNA testing to make sure everyone in a family is related.

On Tuesday a CBP statement says the tests are intended to prevent fake families trying to seek asylum.

The Border Patrol has recently detected human smugglers’ attempts to get immigrants into the U.S. by pretending the members of family units are related to each other when the actually are not. The DNA tests are done with biological material taken using a swab of the inside of the mouths of immigrants.
