A hiker is dead after collapsing in the White Sands National Monument near Alamogordo.
A National Park Service statement says rangers answered a call for help Saturday afternoon near the Alkali Flat trailhead where they found the hiker in an unresponsive state. Park rangers say they found the man less than a mile from the trailhead. Investigators so far speculate that the hiker may have succumbed to the dry, hot weather and the 99-degree heat at the time. They also say there is no shade nor any water available anywhere on the trail.
