Roads into Mescalero Apache Tribe lands will be blocked to prevent coronavirus spread

President of the Mescalero Apache Tribe Gabe Aguilar announced April 6 that roads into reservation lands would be blocked, and access to tribal land limited. The Farmington Daily Times reports that in a news release, Aguilar said those found in violation would be removed and may be fined. “Despite our orders, people are still entering the land and fishing at Mescalero Lake. We will now block the roads and anyone in violation will be escorted off the property, cited and fined.” he said. The Inn of the Mountain Gods was closed more than two weeks ago. However, officials noticed that visitors parked on the side of the road to access the lake for fishing. Closures will be at U.S. 70 and Route 4 and Carrizo Canyon Road that leads into the Inn of the Mountain Gods.
