State Senator says Las Cruces Bishop Denied him Communion Over Abortion Beliefs

Democratic State Senator Joseph Cervantes says he was denied Communion this past weekend by the Catholic Bishop in Las Cruces over his abortion beliefs. Cervantes supports repeal of a state law that would ban abortions in most circumstances. He says some new clergy have said he was not welcome at their communions because of his position. Cervantes says he has participated in his parish church and the Diocese of Las Cruces for 50 years but this last weekend, Bishop Peter Baldacchino of Las Cruces denied him communion. A spokesman for the bishop had no comment.
